Paul Reichert. I think you're dreaming of the impossible. There was a business called Phantom Secure that was claimed to have sold modified BB's to narcotics smugglers, but hard to tell whether they really got as deep into the OS as they said. I don't think there is anybody else who even claimed to have rooted them.

Forum BlackBerry 10 Phones & OS BlackBerry Passport 9 Hi, Is there any way to install custom Rom / gain root privilages / change root files in BlackBerry Passport? There was very little reward to be had by being able to hack a relative handful of devices so no one really tried. Part of BlackBerry's security through obscurity mantra. 10-15-22 0332 PM 1,820 I recall an Android Passport in the wild. Methinks BB got it back though. 10-16-22 1215 AM 12,779 Originally Posted by canuckvoip I recall an Android Passport in the wild. Methinks BB got it back though. Been there done that... Has nothing to do with rooting. 10-16-22 1232 AM 1,820 Originally Posted by Yamahammer Been there done that... Has nothing to do with rooting. Well EXCUUUUSE ME!!! Bwahahahahahaha!!! 10-16-22 1248 AM 42,656 Yeah what BlackBerry could do in their labs is totally different from what us mere consumers are able to do. Was some guy claiming he could do a Passport to Android conversion by swapping out a few chips - that claim seemed to not be a reality. Later he moved onto planning to do full chipset replacements... but that was going to cost more than many paid for their Passports originally. And in the end would have likly been a beta product at best. Either way neither of his "ideas" moved forward to being something you could buy. 10-17-22 1054 AM 3,929 Originally Posted by canuckvoip I recall an Android Passport in the wild. How do I make it so BlackBerry Passport can be detected by ADB. Second, I found that Android 4 BlackBerry OS 10 is based on it is vulnerable to privilege escalation, would it be theoretically possible to use this type of exploit to change root files? 10-19-22 1205 PM 42,656 Originally Posted by mbled Thank you all for the answers. No BB10 is based on QNX, it has an Android 4 emulator, but that has no "control" over the base QNX operating system. If you wanted to tweak some of the Android Emulator settings, that was possible with some Android Utilities. But that didn't affect the base OS, and certainly wouldn't get you root access. Now from a security standpoint... I'm sure some Android vulnerabilities might allow you access to data that the Android "Runtime" already had access to. But gaining full control over the base OS... no. 10-19-22 0147 PM 9 Ok, so I basically bought this phone because I was thinking that it would be a perfect machine for installing Linux big square screen, physical keyboard. I did almost no research, because I though "of course it has unlocked bootloader, back in 2014 every phone had it unlocked" now I am stuck with it. Is there any way you can think of to run somehow Linux on this device, or should I sell it? 10-19-22 0216 PM 27,724 Originally Posted by mbled Ok, so I basically bought this phone because I was thinking that it would be a perfect machine for installing Linux big square screen, physical keyboard. Oh, and it will have to be someone in Canada, Europe or other countries that still have 3g functioning for some time to come. USA is practically out of the question soon anyway unless someone wants it for wifi use only. 10-19-22 1043 PM 1,907 Originally Posted by Chuck Finley69 Sell it or return it Wouldn’t you like to add it to your collection Chuck? 10-20-22 0445 AM 9 Thank you all for the answers. Two more questions. Is it possible to connect BB Passport to ADB? Is there any similar to BB Passport phone out there, that has bootloader unlocked. 10-20-22 1223 PM 42,656 Originally Posted by mbled Thank you all for the answers. Two more questions. Unihertz Titan is a Passport Clone... it's bootloader is unlocked, but getting drivers was an issue. Someone had a custom ROM think it was LineageOS installed, but it wasn't good enough to use as a daily driver. Keep waiting to see if someone with the skill is willing to put the work into making a compatible ROM for the Unihertz PKB phones. But at least their phones have a "mostly" current version of Android on them. Think the Titan is Android 10, the two newer devices are on Android 11. 10-20-22 0134 PM 9 Hi, I am still in possession of my BB Passport, and made a little bit of research. There is group that claims, that they are able to install Android 9 on BB Passport. Can it be real? And if so, is there a way for the phone owner, to replace files in userspace with their own, by use of recently found CVEs in QNX? 04-18-23 0208 PM 63,292 Originally Posted by mbled Hi, I am still in possession of my BB Passport, and made a little bit of research. It was never successful. The person trying to do this needed to throw somewhere in the region of $500,000 at the problem as they needed a minimum number of mother boards made up from memory. 04-19-23 0758 AM 42,656 Originally Posted by mbled Hi, I am still in possession of my BB Passport, and made a little bit of research. And if so, is there a way for the phone owner, to replace files in userspace with their own, by use of recently found CVEs in QNX? His project evolved over time... Originally it was going to be just pop in a new storage chip, flash it with Android 9 and bam you have a Passport with Android. Of course it was going to be a costly process and he was suggesting upgrading the RAM and replacing the battery at the same time. So Passport owner were going to need to cough up around $400 for this "upgrade" some BB10 owners didn't view replacing BB10 as an upgrade. He never showed he could do it.... and later moved on to the idea of replacing all the "guts" of the Passport. Likly the best move as the Passports hardware is rather long in tooth and not really supported in the USA at this point. But he ran into the dead-end of minim orders of five to ten thousand units, and huge up front costs that clearly wasn't practical for the hundred or so that voted in his poll. I don't know if he is still working on it are not. He has several social media accounts that have remained quite on the subject. I don't know if his one recent post was a sign he was starting up again, or just looking to unload a bunch of Passports he had purchased in hope of carrying out his dream. But patching the known vulnerabilities in QNX, he wasn't looking at that and with the security in BB10.... that would be impossible to do. 04-19-23 0827 AM 760 Originally Posted by mbled Hi, I am still in possession of my BB Passport, and made a little bit of research. Getting straight answers from him is like pinning jelly to a wall. I wouldn't risk any funds with him until he has a working model, which in the words of Chuck Finley the Great, will be "Mañana". Forever. 04-19-23 0940 AM 42,656 Originally Posted by mbled Hi, I am still in possession of my BB Passport, and made a little bit of research. You can check out his latest post here His original thread can be found here He seems to have one of the Android Passports that BlackBerry made.... what he hasn't shown is an ability to clone that to another BlackBerry device. And certainly nothing showing a devices running through Android 9 as was his stated goal, opening app or going to Google Play. Folks here including me has gotten pretty tough on him... but this has been going on for a year and half. At some point you have to show your cards... For sure a Passport could run Android really old version as BlackBerry did it on several test units... in the end there were too many issues. Back then Android didn't support a display with that resolution. BlackBerry moved on to another device they already had.... the PRIV. 04-19-23 1059 AM 27,724 Originally Posted by Ph1llip AndroidonPassport is a dead project.
